In addition to alpine and downhill skiing nearby, South Fork has over 55 miles of groomed cross-country ski and snowmobile trails, weather permitting. Close proximity (1 1/2 hour drive) to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, two wildlife refuges (Alamosa - 55 minutes and Monte Vista - 35 minutes). Three historic rail lines in the vicinity (Durango - Silverton (Narrow Gauge), Antonito - Chama (Narrow Gauge) and Alamosa to La Veta (Standard Gauge with a summer western concert on top of the mountain.) Small scenic rail excursion departing South Fork. A short, five-minute walk to the boat/canoe launch ramp on the Rio Grand River, with great trout fishing, and only a 30 minute drive to the Beaver Creek Reservoir. If you enjoy challenging golf, try the Rio Grand Club in South Fork, a relatively new 4-Star 18 hole course with beautiful views and fairways. It's only 10 minutes away.
