If you’re seeking freedom from the daily grind, then you can’t find a
better place to which to escape. “Gakatiyi” is a Cherokee word
meaning “a place of setting free.” No other name could possibly be
more appropriate for this charming mountain home away from home,
perched on a mountainside among majestic native hardwood trees,
mountain laurel and rhododendron. You’ll find three levels of living
space – plenty of room for all your family and friends. The living
room offers lots of windows so you can enjoy majestic long-range
mountain vistas and the reflections of the warm glow of the evening
fire. The combination kitchen and dining area is the perfect place to
prepare, serve and enjoy your daily meals. Off to the side you’ll find
a signature screened porch, comfortable outdoor furnishings and picnic
table, and a massive outdoor wood-burning fireplace. This main level
also features a spacious bedroom with a queen-size bed and separate
full bath. The upper level offers one bedroom with double-size bed,
a loft area with sleeper sofa, and a full bath. The roomy lower level
is where you’ll find another queen-size bed, a media room and the
laundry area. When you stay at Gakatiyi, you’ll never have nothing
to do, unless you want it that way. There’s plenty of activities and
attractions located within the community property and within a few
minutes’ drive. The onsite lake is stocked and offers hours of
catch-and-release fishing to your heart’s content. Take a cool dip in
the lake in the afternoon and cook your favorite barbecue meal in the
evening at the lakeside grilling station and gazebo. You might want
to take a nature hike through the wooded ravine to the community
waterfalls, or perhaps instead enjoy a scenic float down the nearby
historic New River, one of the oldest and few remaining wild rivers
in America. If you don’t want to bring your own, you can easily rent
a canoes, kayaks or rafting tubes to suit your needs in the nearby
community of Todd. You might want to bicycle along the New River on
the scenic (and comfortably flat) Railroad Grade Road to explore Todd
itself, well-known for its charming old-time General Store, folk
storytelling, open-air bluegrass music on Friday nights and seasonal
music and art festivals throughout the year. All sorts of High
Country mountain adventures await you at Gakatiyi – freedom is
calling!
