Nearby Attractions: - Downtown Hilo is a jewel of a town nestled on the shores of Hilo bay; a bay that cruise ships from around the world are only just discovering. Here you will find excellent dining, music, golf and tennis, water sports, movies and museums, a modern mall as well as local arts and craft fairs. Hilo can boast of having one of the great farmers markets (according to Sunset Magazine) and many fine artisans have relocated to East Hawaii for the creative climate of this beautiful city.
We loved the inn. It has the best view on Hilo and on more than one occasion the Lees went out of their way to be of service to two strangers. My wife had to visit the ER in the middle of the night and Jade led the way and Mr. Lee came later and led the way back. We will stay here any time we are in Hilo.
Place looks wonderful, owners extremely helpful and nice. We did not expect this quality from a B&B and don't really know what some users are talking about. We had one of the worst rooms ( there are 4 rooms i think ) and it still was wonderful. You get a nice big kitchen BBQ big screen tv in each room, free parking, internet etc it was extremely nice we stayed there for 5 days. In kona for the same price we got a small dirty room.
A super nice team of father and son. Very friendly but low key, the Lees give you lots of space yet are willing to chat and offer suggestions when asked. We found the Legacy the last minute before we headed out to Hilo, and Jade (the son, who’s the manager) was very prompt and helpful in securing a room for us. We stayed in the Legacy Suite, which had a great view of Hilo Bay as well as the garden and the koi pond below. The room was spacious and bright, very clean and well-kept. Lots of room in terms of floor space, closet space, balcony, dressing area, etc. The bed was big and comfortable, and although we were both jetlagged, we slept really well that night, making us all ready for our trip down south to see the volcanoes. However, next time we know to stay there a few more days to really enjoy the place and explore Hilo. We got the summer rate, which was a real bargain for a room like the Legacy Suite. Since the special rate did not include breakfast, we inquired about paying extra to have the full breakfast usually offered. Jade was very accommodating. The breakfast we got was enough to feed us for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the usual hot items such as eggs, bacon, sausage, and LOTS of fresh and delicious island fruits, juices, coffee… all thoughtfully presented. We had the breakfast outside in the yard, which was just wonderful. The house itself is light and airy with windows and glass blocks to allow in lots of light. Despite having been built in the 1930s and having stood in the rainforest weather for all those years, the Lees have done a great job maintaining the place. They have been running the Legacy for just about a year, and while we were there they talked about doing renovation to make the place even better. We can tell they put a lot of thought and heart into running the place from their attention to small details. Aside from the house, the shiny coats on the family horse and dog really speak to the attentive and caring nature of their owners. The Legacy is located at the top of the hill, and is actually within walking distance (for those who enjoy walking, of course, since it would be all downhill one way, but uphill on the way back) to downtown, the waterfront, and within short drives to many other places to visit. The website (put together by Jade himself) gives clear driving directions from the airport. Overall, we were very very happy to have found Hilltop Legacy as the first stop for our trip. Our stay there started our trip with a very positive and warm note. We definitely plan to return to the Big Island, and will stay with the Lees again (for a few more days) next time.
Great view and excellent value. The hosts are wonderful. The breakfast was yummy. Loved the grounds and the friendly horse.
I stay at many B&Bs throughout the continent, and few were as relaxing as the Hilltop Legacy. I stayed in the Legacy Suite. The room was a very large...huge flat screen TV...beautiful bathroom with all the little amenities. I loved the complimentary fruit plate when I checked in (I'm a muncher). The in-room Coffee was excellent. The Japanese style garden and koi pond were very well maintained. It's very obvious the innkeepers here at the Hilltop Legacy take pride in what they do. Keep up the great work! I hope to be back one day.
I normally stay at hotels when I travel, but this time I decided to try something different. The Hilltop Legacy was the first vacation rental I have stayed at. This property was beautiful. The hosts were very kind and informative. They helped me plan out my stay in Hilo and gave great recommendations on places to see. This property is located in the heart of Downtown Hilo but without the noise of town. At night the relaxing sounds of frogs put you to sleep. They are currently renovating the property but it was still very quiet . I will definitely stay here again.
Old fashioned hospitality combined with with breath taking views makes this wonderful home the 'place to stay' when your vacationing in Hilo, Hawaii. They have the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. My daughter and myself truly enjoyed everyday here. Barb & Mishele
I truly enjoyed your island hospitality and personal care to detail of every meal. The surroundings were like a mini-tropical retreat! And, a special thanks to Mr. Lee for the adventurous ride to Waipio Valley! I'd sincerely recommend this peaceful place!
This is our first stay at a B&B and found it to be absolutely wonderful. It's a great alternative to your traditional, expensive hotel stay. Hospitality was exceptional. Very friendly, but yet gives you your space. David and Barbara Kong Wailuku, Maui
